Degree Programmes

Presently, the Department offers (i) Bachelor of Planning (B.Plan) – A four year (eight semesters) undergraduate degree programme, (ii) Master of Planning (Urban and Regional Planning) [M.Plan (URP)] – a two year (four semesters) postgraduate degree programme and (iii) doctoral degree programme (Ph.D.).

These programmes are primarily aimed to equip the students with knowledge, analytical, interpretative and technical skills required to comprehend and address the issues concerning the discipline of urban and regional planning. These programmes are primarily aimed to equip the students with knowledge, analytical, interpretative, technical, practical skills and real time experience required to comprehend and address the issues concerning the discipline of urban and regional planning. The department very often organizes national / international conferences, seminars, and workshops and has always updated academic networking with eminent national / international institutions and organizations.

Course Curriculum

The course curriculum is rigorously and meticulously designed. The present curriculum is designed so as to enable the students to serve in various professional capacities of academics, research, industry in both private and government organizations. The department periodically revises the course curriculum to meet the changing needs. The following are the details of curriculum of the programmes offered by the Department.

Bachelor of Planning

The programme is divided into eight semesters. Each semester has a total of 26 credits with a combination of planning studio, lab-based subjects and theory courses. Studios and labs are hands-on based, where the students learn by doing. The planning studio exercises are designed to deal with planning problems at all levels viz., site planning, area planning, urban planning and regional planning. The studios also deal with projectization and financial planning aspects. The first four semesters focus on the fundamentals along with theories and techniques in planning, while the remaining four semesters help develop advanced skill sets, with domain specific specializations in the form of pool of elective subjects. Students also get an opportunity to do their internship in planning based organizations where they are exposed to practical and field knowledge.


Master of Planning: Urban & Regional Planning

The programme is divided into four semesters. The total credits offered are 100, with 25 credits per semester with a combination of planning studio, lab-based subjects and theory courses. The first semester is an integrated semester with subjects on planning history, built environment, economics & sociology, demography & quantitative methods, infrastructure planning and planning techniques. The second semester offers regional planning studio with allied subjects on regional planning and analysis, planning legislation, urban governance and finance, and seminar. Besides, an elective is also offered. The third semester focuses on urban planning with allied subjects on project planning, real estate management, and research design. Besides, professional training, electives and common pool electives are also offered. The final semester is specifically for research building culminating in the form of a thesis on a topic of interest of each individual student. This semester offers thesis, general proficiency and one elective.



Doctoral Program

Besides the undergraduate and postgraduate programme, the Department also offers doctoral programme in the areas within the domain the urban and regional planning. These programmes are systematically structured and designed to nurture high quality research with periodical reviews by the Departmental Research Committees.
